Legends vs.
Cuddlemuffin (4-0) MassWiff
veteran Brendan Sargent threw a complete game shutout, surrendering only one
hit. He also provided the only run support he would get, hitting two 2-R
homeruns off of Cuddlemuffin legend Brian Foley. Rubber
Souls vs. Dr. Teeth (2-1) In an all-out
pitcher’s duel, Dan Frieje and the Rubber Souls barely edged out the one-man
team of Chris McKay. A more stunning victory would come later on for the
Rubber Souls, who are proving to be a real contender in the 2008 season. Cuddlemuffin vs. Midnight
Express (3-0) Josh
Belanger was the star in this performance, going yard twice and driving in
all three runs against Cuddlemuffin’s other starter, Bryan Gregoire. Josh’s
anonymous teammate, perhaps Nate Burbank, threw a no-hitter in his MassWiff
debut, impressing thousands. Rubber
Souls vs. Legends (1-0) In this colossal upset, MassWiff sophomore Pat
LaRiviere stunned the Legends and his college roommate Brendan Sargent in an
unbelievable victory. LaRiviere not only no-hit the offensively dangerous
Legends, but hit a solo shot off of Sargent—only the second he’s given up
since the beginning of the 2007 season. It was one of three hits given up by
Sargent, who pitched 6 innings of 1-run wiff, but could not walk away with
the victory. |
TOP STORIES A LEGENDARY FINISH!! Legends win MassWiff 2008
Championship In a stunning upset, Brendan Sargent and his
Legends took home the Golden Wiffleballs this summer in the 2008 MassWiff
Championship. After winning their first two games during week 1, Brendan
Sargent and Jon Brennan had great confidence and powerful momentum entering
the second and final week. With their spot in the finals secured, they hit a
bump in the road and only Sargent was able to attend the last week. As the
reigning champions, Midnight Express, handled their only opponent of the day,
Sargent grew nervous. He was matched up against two of the best that MassWiff
had to offer. The first game didn’t end until the 9th inning, when
James Nugent rocked a three-run bomb off of the weary Sargent. Fortunately,
Legends were in the winner’s bracket and therefore had to lose two games to
be eliminated. That would not happen. In the top of the 3rd inning
in game two, Sargent skied a solo shot to dead center, giving him a 1-0 lead
that he would hang on to with no problems. Overall, Sargent pitched 28
innings in the playoff, going 3-1 and allowing only three runs on Nugent’s
homer. The Legends took home the championship and are looking to defend it
again next year. If

and obviously more fun. Highlights 08/13 The first round of
the MASSWIFF 2008 Playoffs were interesting, indeed. The Rubber Souls were
the first team to go, losing 2-0 to Legends followed by a devastating 11-2
loss to Cuddlemuffin. Cuddlemuffin was swiftly and graciously knocked out by
Midnight Express, with Captain Josh Belanger hitting a three run homerun
which turned out to be the difference in this 4-1 victory. However, Midnight
was only in this game because of a stunning 6-5 loss to Chris McKay, the sole
representative of Dr. Teeth. McKay was up 5-0 going into the bottom of the
last inning, where he surrendered two homeruns to Nugent and Belanger, 5 runs
total. He managed to end the damage there, and it was a good thing he did,
because the first pitch he saw in extra innings, McKay took a James Nugent
riser out of the ballpark. He then shut down Midnight in the bottom of that
inning and moved on in the winner’s bracket. Sargent followed his complete
game shutout of Rubber Souls with an equally impressive performance against
the red hot McKay—a 5-0 complete game shutout. In his last day in MassWiff,
Jon Brennan went out with a bang, hitting a grand slam and driving in 5 runs.
Legends is the
only team remaining in the winner’s bracket, and must be beaten twice by
either Dr. Teeth or Midnight Express in order for any other team to claim the
championship. August 20th. Tune in. Highlights 08/06 The last week of
the regular season provided some entertaining and riveting conclusions to
MassWiff ’08. Sargent pitched a complete game shutout, surrendering only two
hits to Rubber Souls and defeating them 5-0.
Brennan hit a three-run homerun in the first with a separated left shoulder.
Midnight Express defeated the Legends 4-0.
Sargent allowed only one hit throughout the game, but the wet mound caused
him to lose control quickly in the first, surrendering all four runs on
walks. He also loves excuses. Dr. Teeth mercied Cuddlemuffin 13-0. Phil “Elbows” Lombardi hit a
triple and a homerun in the victory. Midnight went on to defeat Cuddlemuffin 4-2, and because the run difference
between them and Legends was 4-1 in favor of Midnight, Midnight Express winds
up as the first place team in MassWiff ’08. The 5 teams will square off next
Wednesday for the playoffs. The champions will receive the coveted Golden
Wiffleballs and a whole lot of pride. Highlights 07/30 As the season comes closer to an end, upsets are becoming more
and more prevalent. The two most notable victories of the week came from
Rubber Souls, who came back from a first inning, 7 run deficit to defeat
Midnight Express 9-7. LaRiviere pitched until he could no longer, but hit a
grand slam to put his team back in it. Belanger also homered for Midnight.
The next upset came from veteran Cuddlemuffin, coming back in the bottom of
the 6th to defeat the Legends 3-2. Brian Foley drove in all three
runs with two homeruns off Legends ace Jon Brennan. Sargent drove in the
Legends’ runs with a homerun and a double. Legends defeated Isotopes as well
on Wednesday, with Sargent driving in all four including a walk-off bases
loaded walk and a two-run shot in the 4th. Isotopes lost their
only other game in a mutual forfeit with Rubber Souls—both teams receiving a
loss. Highlights 07/16 Midnight Express vs. Legends (1-0) In this Battle
of the MassWiff Titans, former Dirtdog James Nugent took on Brendan Sargent
of Legends. Nugent’s control was shaky in the first inning, allowing a run on
a bases-loaded walk by Sargent. Sargent pitched another complete game
shutout, improving his E.R.A. to 0.35. His sixth inning was shaky, allowing
the a walk and the only hit from Midnight by slugger Josh Belanger. Though
the Legends came out on top, you can bet this is not the last time these two
giants of wiffleball will meet. Cuddlemuffin vs. Dr. Teeth (7-1) Chris McKay and
Phil Lombardi led Dr. Teeth to a victory in this game, with McKay
surrendering only one run on a Bryan Gregoire homerun—his first of the
season. McKay, aside from pitching a gem, drove in two on a colossal homerun
in the third. Dr. Teeth vs. Midnight Express (5-3) Chris McKay once
again shined in his second victory of the day, using his sheer power at the
plate and a little help from the arm of his teammate Lombardi to overcome the
reigning champs, Midnight Express. The banter between Belanger and McKay went
just as far as McKay’s second two-run homerun of the afternoon travelled.
Belanger and Nugent looked like they were making a comeback towards the end,
but McKay was able to slam the door and sweep the day. Cuddlemuffin vs. Rubber Souls (1-0) Cuddlemuffin was
able to rebound from their first loss with a stunning victory over Pat
LaRiviere and the Rubber Souls. While LaRiviere’s stuff was as impressive as
always, his control was far from adequate. Perhaps it was the bug that flew
into his eyes and took the once-championship high school wrestler to his
knees. Perhaps it just wasn’t his day. But either way, Cuddlemuffin got their
first win of the season in this nailbiter. Congratulations
to the Midnight Express 2007 Champs! And to
Runners-up, Breen’s!
